Gerrit Dirk Buitenhuis (1943) took his first steps on the musical path with the local concert band “Voorwaarts”, of which his grandfather was one of the founders. 
He studied at the Utrecht Conservatory - piano and clarinet, and at the Tilburg Conservatory, orchestral conducting (major) and obtained all diplomas cum laude. His teachers included Herman Strategier and Rocus van Yperen.

At the age of 18 he became a member of the Marine Band of the Royal Navy. At the Band he successively fulfilled the functions of solo clarinet player, concertmaster and producer / arranger. From April 1986 until 1995 Gert Buitenhuis was director / conductor of the Marine Band. 
In April 1995 he received a royal decoration (Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau with the swords) for his musical achievements. In connection with his 25th anniversary at O.B.K. For all his efforts in the cultural field, Gert received the Zeister appreciation symbol “Ot en Sien”.

In addition to conducting the 'Lillestrøm Musikkorps' from Norway for several years in the 1990s, he was the conductor of the Concert Band 'O.B.K.' for a period of 40 years until October 1, 2013. from Zeist.

He is engaged in many other activities. He has been a guest teacher in wind band / brass band conducting in various European conservatories and is a jury member at various national (KNFM / NFCM / FKM) and international competitions such as the World Music Competition in Kerkrade.

Gert Buitenhuis received the Dutch Wind Music Prize 2009. This prestigious prize is awarded every two years by the World Music Competition and the Association of Orchestra Conductors in collaboration with ‘Kunstfactor’. The prize is intended for a person or organization that plays or has played an important role in the development and innovation of Dutch wind music. The prize was previously awarded to Henk van Lijnschooten (2003), Jaap Koops (2005) and Johan de Meij (2007). 
Gert Buitenhuis, who was appointed by the Royal Harmony Company O.B.K. was recently appointed Honorary Conductor, received the the Honorary Medal from the municipality of Zeist during his Farewell Concert on 28 September 2013.

Gerrit Dirk Buitenhuis (1943) zette zijn eerste schreden op het muzikale pad bij de Zeister muziekvereniging Voorwaarts, waarvan zijn opa één der oprichters was.
Hij studeerde aan het Utrechts Conservatorium – piano en klarinet, en aan het Tilburgs Conservatorium, orkestdirectie (grootdiploma) en behaalde alle diploma’s cum laude. Zijn docenten waren o.a. Herman Strategier en Rocus van Yperen.

Op 18-jarige leeftijd ging hij deel uitmaken van de Marinierskapel der Koninklijke Marine. Bij de kapel vervulde hij achtereenvolgens de functies van solo-klarinettist, concertmeester en producer/arrangeur.
Vanaf 1986 tot 1995 was Gert Buitenhuis directeur/dirigent van de Marinierskapel. 
In april 1995 ontving hij een koninklijke onderscheiding (Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau met de zwaarden) voor zijn muzikale verdiensten. In verband met zijn 25-jarig jubileum bij O.B.K. ontving Gert voor al zijn inspanningen op cultureel gebied het Zeister waarderingssymbool “Ot en Sien”.

Naast in de jaren '90 enkele jaren het 'Lillestrøm Musikkorps' uit Noorwegen te hebben gedirigeerd, was hij tot 1 oktober 2013 voor een periode van 40 jaar dirigent van het Koninklijk Harmonie Gezelschap 'O.B.K.' uit Zeist.

Hij houdt zich met nog tal van andere werkzaamheden bezig. Zo was hij gastdocent harmonie/fanfare directie in verschillende Europese conservatoria en is hij jurylid bij diverse nationale (KNFM/NFCM/FKM) en internationale concoursen zoals het Wereld Muziek Concours te Kerkrade.

Gert Buitenhuis ontving de Nederlandse Blaasmuziekprijs 2009. Deze prestigieuze prijs wordt tweejaarlijks uitgereikt door het Wereld Muziek Concours en de Bond van Orkestdirigenten i.s.m. Kunstfactor. De prijs is bedoeld voor een persoon of organisatie die een belangrijke rol speelt of heeft gespeeld in de ontwikkeling en vernieuwing van de Nederlandse blaasmuziek. Eerder werd de prijs uitgereikt aan Henk van Lijnschooten (2003), Jaap Koops (2005) en Johan de Meij (2007). 
Gert Buitenhuis, die door het Koninklijk Harmoniegezelschap O.B.K. onlangs werd benoemd tot Eredirigent, ontving tijdens zijn Afscheidsconcert op 28 september 2013 de Erepenning van de gemeente Zeist.
