David Forshaw (1938) who has been writing music since the age of 12, gained a bachelor degree at Cardiff University in1961. His piano concerto written in that year got a performance at last in 2014 played impeccably by local pianist Ron Abramski with the St.Helens Sinfonietta (of which he is now the Chairman). 

Since his early retirement from full-time teaching in 1992, David gained an MA in composition at Huddersfield University and has devoted most of his time to composition as an executive member of the North West Composers Association and to astronomy as ex- President of the Liverpool Astronomical Society. As will be seen from this selection, many pieces have been inspired by astronomy: ‘Albireo’ for clarinet and piano; ‘Aspects of Pegasus’ for wind quintet; ‘From Southern Skies’ for clarinet quartet, and works for orchestra, ‘The Year of the Comet’ ‘Planet Dances’, ‘Into the Light’, ‘Shadow over Parinacota’  and most recently ‘Coming Closer’. 

His music, despite having a distinct fingerprint, is written in a variety of styles, from the tough ‘Kyrie’ and ‘Four pieces after Charles Messier’ for piano to simple anthems for amateur choirs.  They are written, therefore, mainly with the performers in mind, e.g. ‘Spheres of Glass’ for select solo instrumentalists, SATB and Childrens’ choir, although every piece seeks to be as challenging as the artists can manage. There are some pieces which are unperformed which  he would dearly love to get an airing such as the 35 minute song cycle ‘Orcadian Calendars’ set to poems by the Orkney poet George Mackay Brown.  He is at present writing a series of pieces for piano,  under the banner of ‘Clouds’ (e.g. ‘Noctilucence’ and ‘Cirrostratus’) carrying on the astronomical theme.

Zijn muziek is, ondanks een duidelijke vingerafdruk, in verschillende stijlen geschreven, van het stoere ‘Kyrie’ en ‘Vier stukken naar Charles Messier’ voor piano tot eenvoudige hymnes voor amateurkoren. Ze zijn daarom voornamelijk geschreven met de artiesten in gedachten, bijv. ‘Spheres of Glass’ voor geselecteerde solo-instrumentalisten, SATB en kinderkoor, hoewel elk stuk zo uitdagend probeert te zijn als de artiesten aankunnen. Er zijn enkele stukken die niet zijn uitgevoerd en die hij heel graag zou willen laten zien, zoals de 35 minuten durende liedcyclus ‘Orcadian Calendars’ op gedichten van de Orkney-dichter George Mackay Brown. Momenteel schrijft hij een serie stukken voor piano, onder de vlag van ‘Clouds’ (bijv. ‘Noctilucence’ en ‘Cirrostratus’) die het astronomische thema voortzetten.
