Marco Muilwijk (1992) was born in Alphen aan den Rijn in the Netherlands. He studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels (KCB) under Jurgen De Pillecyn (Composition), Hans van Daele (Harmony), and Jan D’Haene (Counterpoint and Fugue), and during this time also followed two years of German and Literature Studies at the Free University of Brussels (VUB).

He completed his Master in Composition cum laude in 2018, including spending a year at the Franz Liszt Hochschule für Musik in Weimar, Germany, where he studied with Reinhard Wolschina.

He discovered a love of music early in life, beginning to play the violin at the age of seven and the French horn at eight. At 16 he became more interested in composing than performing and developed a keen interest in lesser-known repertoires.

In his short career he has garnered success, producing an impressive repertoire, developing his own authentic, modern-romantic and expressionistic style and honing in on his compositional interests. His first orchestral work, 2015 Europa, won the Bromley Symphony Orchestra Centenary Composition Competition. Die gefrorene Rose (2017), his second work for orchestra, was well received and reviewed upon its premier in Germany.  He has also written a wide range of chamber music, including song cycles and a suite for classical guitar.

Europa is featured on ABLAZE Records’ Orchestral Masters Vol. 6, played by the Brno Philharmonic conducted by Mikel Toms. Fantasy for orchestra (2018) is featured on Vol. 7 in 2021. Muilwijk’s music has been published with the German music publisher Concustic.

In addition to composing, Muilwijk is an experienced orchestrator and arranger.

Marco Muilwijk werd in 1992 in Alphen aan den Rijn geboren. Hij studeerde aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel bij Jurgen De Pillecyn (Compositie), Hans van Daele (Harmonieleer) en Jan D’Haene (Contrapunt en Fuga), en volgde twee jaar lang, tegelijkertijd met zijn studie aan het conservatorium, vakken in het bereik van de Duitse taal, Duitse literatuur en literatuurwetenschap aan de Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

Als onderdeel van de Master Compositie studeerde hij tevens een jaar aan de Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt te Weimar, Duitsland, in de klas van Reinhard Wolschina. In 2018 voltooide hij zijn Master Compositie cum laude.

Hij ontdekte al jong een liefde voor muziek, begon op zevenjarige leeftijd viool, en op achtjarige leeftijd hoorn te spelen. Op zestienjarige leeftijd raakte hij meer geïnteresseerd in het componeren dan het uitvoeren van muziek en ontwikkelde een grote interesse in minder bekend repertoire.

In zijn korte carrière boekte hij al veel succes, componeerde een breed repertoire aan kamer- en orkestmuziek en ontwikkelde een authentieke, modernromantische en expressionistische stijl. In 2018 won hij de Bromley Symphony Orchestra Centenary Composition Competition met zijn eerste orkestwerk Europa (2015). Die gefrorene Rose (2017), zijn tweede orkestwerk, werd goed ontvangen bij de première in Duitsland. Hij heeft ook een brede waaier aan kamermuziek geschreven, waaronder liederencycli en een suite voor gitaar.

Europa is uitgebracht door ABLAZE Records op het album Orchestral Masters Vol. 6, gespeeld door de Brno Philharmonic onder leiding van Mikel Toms. Fantasy for orchestra (2018) is in 2021 uitgebracht op Vol. 7. Muilwijks werken zijn onder andere uitgegeven bij de Duitse muziekuitgeverij Concustic.

Naast het componeren is Muilwijk een ervaren orkestrator en arrangeur.
