String Quartet
His four part string quartet makes use of practicaly every oportunity a string quartet setting can offer. The first part contains the most important musical material of the work. Out of the choral melody Es ist genug, so nimm, Herr grows the core idea of the whole work: the B.A.C.H.- motive. The three major secunds from the choral melody and the two minor secunds of the B.A.CH. -motive are interwoven in such a way that a remarkable density of sounds results from it. In the second part, this game of major and minor secunds evokes a demonic hunting feeling. The introspective third part is characterized by the composer's most personal lyricism. After a notturno-entry follows a pastoral section full of mysterious natural sounds. Singing birds are imitated, rags from the Catalan Folksong El cant des ocells are used and processed. In this third and fourth part, the composer's stilistic diversity and control are features of attraction. The fourth part is a capricious allegro. At a certain point, it sounds as if we hear Bach himself through the music, but eventually the finale transforms into a big, boisterous dance wherein the composer makes use of the complete range of playing techniques - double string, sul ponte-playing, quarter tones, spiccato a.o.
