Il Conte dell’Acqua

    The Concert Band “Orpheus” from Tilburg (Netherlands) played in a tournament in 2007. The board asked me to write a solo piece for their Saxophone-player Jules van de Loo. I chose the Soprano Saxophone. When I was working on the thematical material, I decided to use a theme which I wanted to use for already two years and which haunted me continuously. It seemed a good choice, for I could delete the tune from my head. The theme however was fairly jumpy. By using this theme slowly, I got a kind of a complementary  two-voice tune. I used this idea especially in the middle-part, where the theme returns in Minor. While writing, I had two Saxophone-players in mind, Jules van de Loo and Emanuele Contis ( form Sardinia). The title is based on both of them.

Het Tilburgse harmonieorkest "Orpheus" ging in november 2007 op concours. Het bestuur had me gevraagd een solostuk te schrijven voor de saxofonist Jules van de Loo. Mijn keuze viel op de Sopraansax. Ik was al enige tijd bezig thematisch materiaal te maken toen ik besloot een thema te gebruiken dat ik al twee jaar wilde gebruiken en dat me continu achtervolgde. Dat leek me een goede keuze, want dan zou ik het tenminste uit mijn hoofd kunnen wissen. Het was echter nogal een springerig thema. Door dit thema langzaam te gebruiken ontstaat een soort complementaire tweestemmigheid. Dit gegeven heb ik vooral in het middendeel, waar het thema in mineur terugkomt. Tijdens het schrijven had ik twee mensen in gedachten, Jules van de Loo en Emanuele Contis, een Sardijnse saxofonist. De titel is op beide muzikanten gebaseerd.
