Wind Orchestra (with obligate Harp)
Conductor Jo Schelkens commissioned me to compose a piece for his wind orchestra Panta Rei in Leuven, so starting from Heraclitus' quote was the obvious choice. “Panta Rhei” means “everything flows”. The idea behind this information is that everything in the world is moving: everything is constantly changing: everything flows. Reading Ovid's Metamorphoses, the quote "omnia mutantur, nihil interit" came across which means "everything changes, but nothing perishes" which has become a perfect supplement and also the subtitle. Panta r(h)ei is build on a gently undulating, naturally moving, 'flowing' melody that carries the entire work, as an accompaniment or as a melodic theme and even produced a number of melodies that mutate and transpose. Throughout the composition both will replenish, support and fight each other but there will be no victor: nothing perishes!
