Love Divine is a calm and relaxed fantasy on Blaenwern
Love Divine is a work that uses the hymn tune Blaenwern. The text that accompanies it begins with the phrase “Love Divine, all loves excelling.” For the music I started to associate with that fact. This led to two musical themes derived from the hymn tune
The work begins with the feelings of air, purity and rippling. The flugelhorn and euphonium play solos on a bed of slow accompaniment. Next we hear the first half of Blaenwern, a preview of divine love. The work continues with an earthy, peaceful and rooted feel. This culminates in the second part of Blaenwern. A short return of the pure and rippling feeling brings us to the conclusion in which the hymn can be heard in full and culminates in a grand conclusion.
