Pie Jesu for mixed choir with divisi [SSAATTBB]
Musically, this prayer for peace is expressed in various ways. Throughout the work, tutti-sequences alternate with alternative ensembles, thus achieving an internal dialogue and on outspoken lyric expression. The composition is also characterised by vivid dynamics including modulations, changes of tempo and rather detailed performance directions. Textually, the piece obtains its full depth on the second verse, in which the Lamb of God is addressed (‘Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi’). These words, carried on a steady ‘accelerando et crescendo’, lead to a climax in forte fortissimo on ‘peccata mundi’. In this sequence, the word ‘peccata’ is constantly repeated as if it were to signal an ultimate, almost swearing confession with regard to the Lord. Immediately following this outburst, starting in piano, the final verse ‘dona requiem aeternam; dona eis sempiternam requiem’ is sang until the end. It contains the first notes of the opening theme of the traditional Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. The plea for eternal peace ends with a last, very softly sung ‘requiem’.
