Dramatic Cantate for female voice, speaker, mixed choir, string trio and small percussion
The text was mainly taken from religious sources such as the Bible books Sapientiae and Ecclesiasticus and the Good Friday Liturgy, but it also contains fragments from Shakespeare's Hamlet.
Life (light) is central in this work, but inescapable death (darkness) is omnipresent. In turn, it gives away to the birth of the 'lux aeterna'.
There are four parts, whose titles match the techniques used. 'A time to speak' (speaking-chorus), 'A time to sing' (cantabile), 'A time to laugh' (dance-like character), 'A time to mourn' (atonal, modal or polytonal).
This work was commissioned by VRT-Radio 3 as an 'in memoriam' dedicated to the composer Jan Decadt.
