Sanctus-Benedictus for Soprano Solo and Mixed Choir with divisi

The Sanctus is an ancient Christian hymn sung or spoken before the ordination prayer in traditional liturgies. The text has two parts: Sanctus and Benedictus. Both parts conclude with the phrase: Hosanna in excelsis!
Rudi Tas is known for fusing innovative elements with traditional means and also providing an accessible choral repertoire. This is immediately audible: mumbling female voices create a 'sound field', while the acclaimed 'Holy, Holy, Holy' is recited by the soprano solo.
The infectious nature of the Pleni sunt caeli spreads a natural enthusiasm and positive energy. Both the melodic lines and harmony are unconventional. Different modes like the lydian, mixolydian and ionic are central to the construction of this melody!

The Benedictus has a contemplative character, but one you will be captivated by. There are predominantly homophonic structures and consonances that colour with a pleasantly dissonant edge, while the melodic lines of the soprano solo transcend the whole.
The Benedictus can be performed as a separate motet in concert.
