Program Notes

Stately Polonaise in 3/4 time.

The Polonaise in D for piano (1902) was composed by Anatoli Liadov (also known as Lyadov), a Russian composer, in honor of Anton Rubinstein, an influential pianist, composer and conductor. Rubinstein was one of the founders of professional musical life in Russia, partly through the founding of the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Liadov, who himself studied at this conservatory, honored Rubinstein with this Polonaise after his death in 1894.

The Polonaise is a traditional Polish dance, characterized by a stately and solemn rhythm in a 3/4 time, making it a fitting genre for a tribute to a great musician like Rubinstein.

Composer and arranger Johan Verhey has arranged this beautiful gem for wind band, creating a rewarding work that can feature on the program of any beginning to advanced wind orchestra.
