ZAPATEADO "XX" (two X's) Clarinet Quartet - Arrangement by Everardo García

The musical structure of the Zapateado-Vals is generally composed of a short introduction, followed by three variations, a repetitive tutti, and a concise but coherent ending. The original piece is written for a solo clarinet with band accompaniment. However, this musical structure is also available for all wind instruments, with unique solos and tuttis. The piece “XX zapateado for clarinet and band” is widely recognized for its introduction, tutti, and coda. These sections are commonly performed with different variations and always for the clarinet instrument.

The origin of the zapateado is uncertain. It is believed to come from the Spanish sevillanas, fandanguillos, bulerías, and peteneras, which were fused with African elements. However, it was in Mexico where this type of instrumental zapateado took root and enriched the traditional philharmonic bands of the Oaxacan towns. The zapateado represents a global fusion between cultures and their representations. There is no completely pure dance or musical form; they are all products of fusion.
