Squirrel Monkey

In December 2004 the premiere took place of "Squirrel Monkey" on the Italian island of Sardinia, during my Band Conducting exam. I wrote this piece for my girlfriend Marjanne. A squirrel monkey is a little monkey, known from Pippi Longstocking. Since I found Marjanne looking like such a monkey right away when I met her, I called it that way. The subtitle of the piece is: Una Canzonetta d'Amore per una Scimietta Cara (A love song for a sweet little monkey). The piece is built around the theme, which emerges halfway through the piece like a jazz ballad. This theme, and actually the whole piece is based on the Maj9 chord (a big triad with a big seventh and a big nine), my favorite chord because it radiates so much loveliness and zest for life.                                          I have been inspired by two pieces, "Apalachian Spring" by the composer Aaron Copland, and "Pini di Roma" by Ottorino Respighi.

In december 2004 vond de première plaats van "Squirrel Monkey" op het Italiaanse eiland Sardinië, tijdens mijn HaFa-directie-examen. Dit stuk schreef ik voor mijn vriendin Marjanne. Een squirrel monkey is een doodshoofdaapje, bekend van Pippi Langkous. Aangezien ik Marjanne al meteen toen ik haar leerde kennen op zo'n aapje vond lijken, heb ik het stuk zo genoemd. De subtitel van het stuk is dan ook: Una Canzonetta d'Amore per una Scimietta Cara ( Een liefdesliedje voor een lief aapje).
Het stuk is als het ware om het thema heen gebouwd, welke halverwege het stuk naar voren komt als een jazz-ballad. Dit thema, en eigenlijk het hele stuk, is gebaseerd op het Maj9-akkoord ( een grote drieklank met een groot septiem en een grote none), mijn favoriete akkoord omdat het zoveel lieflijkheid en levenslust uitstraalt.
Ik heb me door twee stukken laten inspireren, "Apalachian Spring" van Aaron Copland, en "Pini di Roma" van Ottorino Respighi.
