Work about the good centaur Cheiron. The overlapping variations depict his life.
The work opens with a chorale, in which the theme is set in a dark mystical atmosphere. In the next part, the battle is recognizable and comes the romantic slow middle part, in which it is about winning Tetis's love. Then we hear again Cheiron's struggles and pains by the poisonous arrow of Heracles and how he gives up his immortality. At the end the chorale can be heard again, but then as the glorious conclusion of a rich life.
