Brass Band
Hymn for a destroyed City by Joop van Dijk was composed on behalf of the Marine Band of
the Royal Netherlands Navy on the occasion of the annual commemoration of the bombing of
Rotterdam on May 14, 1940. This commemoration takes place at Plein 1940 where The famous
bronze statue by Ossip Zadkine also bears the same name. This statue symbolizes the bombed
city center of Rotterdam and is one of the most famous war monuments in the world. During
the annual commemoration on Plein 1940, the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy
plays this hymn near the monument.
