One of the most famous Dutch naval heroes in history is Piet Hein, born in 1577 in Delfshaven, at that time part of Delft. His most famous achievement is the capture of the silver fleet from the Spanish in 1628. Even long after his death, his fame was so great that more than two hundred years later a song was written about him:
De Zilvervloot. In 1629, Piet Hein died during a naval battle on the North Sea, after which his body was buried in the Oude Kerk in Delft.
Many centuries later, during a restoration of his grave monument in 2024, a mural with a portrait of the famous captain was found on it. This discovery was one of the reasons for the Delft Chamber Orchestra Con Sequenza to commission this musical work in the context of a concert program about Delft composers and other Delft celebrities: a new composition about Piet Hein, based on the song De Zilvervloot.
This composition, written by Peter Habraken, was premiered on February 9, 2025 by Delft Chamber Orchestra Con Sequenza conducted by Martin van der Brugge, in the Stanislaskapel at Westplantsoen 73 in Delft, the Netherlands.
