Symphonic poem for Concert Band
The endless battle against the mighty sea...
“Masalant” takes you to a small part of Holland during the Middle Ages. This area is situated in what today is known as the province of Zuid-Holland, in the west of The Netherlands.
Through their boundless energy and ceaseless efforts, the inhabitants of the then swampy area managed to transform this region into the current cultural landscape, consisting of the characteristic elongated meadows, dikes, creeks and windmills. The current village of Maasland occupied a key position in this, with no fewer than two castles in the vicinity. The castles from that rich past are no longer there, but the landscape has remained largely unchanged.
The composition “Masalant” is inspired by these times long gone, with medieval knights and their stately castles, as well as the relentless struggle of the inhabitants against the mighty sea.
