Remembrance Music for Mória Refugee Camp - written for two baritone saxophones
It all starts with a small flame… but in no time a large part of the camp is ablaze.
On the night of 8 to 9 September 2020, fires were set in several places in the Mória refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos. The heavily overcrowded camp, whose residents were already quarantined due to corona infections, largely burned down. Although there were fortunately no deaths, thousands had to flee for their lives.
This composition attempts to musically describe the impact of this inferno on the inhabitants.
After the discovery of the fires, chaos and panic reign; sirens can be heard.
After the fires have been extinguished, grief over the loss of tangible memories of life left behind in the native land.
Eventually, feelings of hope for a better future may arise again…
The world premiere of this composition was given by Daan van Koppen and Erik-Jan de With on June 26, 2021 in the Rietveldtheater in Delft.
