Werner Janssen – Composer, director, saxophonist and improvisation coach.

Werner Jansen started playing the saxophone when he was given a soprano sax from his father at the age of 5. At the age of 16 he discovered improvisation and played music by ear. After completing his mathematics studies, he was admitted to the jazz course at the conservatory.

Composing
His personal drive in his compositions is to connect musical styles. And to make the world of jazz, pop and world music accessible to classically trained musicians in composed and written material. Improvisation, articulation and phrasing do play an important role in these compositions.
His compositions reflect his passion for both light and classical music and offer wind orchestras a fun way to get acquainted with the way of playing light music. He composes new material, swinging and with a feeling for the different musical worlds, thus offering the classically oriented ensembles the opportunity to master contemporary material.

Making music
His has a wide field of activity as a saxophonist. He regularly performs with the Metropole Orchestra, the WDR Big Band, the Konrad Koselleck Big Band, the Ramblers and the Royal Netherlands Air Force Orchestra. He also plays as a multi-instrumentalist in projects by entertainer Ellen ten Damme and opera singer Tania Kross. And was a guest soloist with the North Netherlands Orchestra, the Dutch Orchestra of the South and the Orchestra of the East. He has also done studio work for numerous artists and played in musicals.

Werner has performed with a wide variety of artists. Such as Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Toots Thielemans, John Scofield, Joe Lovano, Dick Oatts, Bono, Cliff Richard, Chaka Kahn, Gregory Porter, Ellen ten Damme, Tania Kross, Nick and Simon, Paul de Leeuw and Trijntje Oosterhuis. And with conductors such as Maria Schneider, Vince Mendoza, Jules Buckley and Jerry van Rooijen. He won a Grammy with the Metropole Orchestra and Snarky Puppy.

These inspiring experiences led him to express his love for music and to inspire others to rise above themselves when they improvise. He also wrote some books about his own improvisation methods.

Conducting
Werner performs as guest conductor of the Orchestra of the Royal Netherlands Air Force and is the permanent conductor of the Jazz Warriors Big Band in Amsterdam, Jazz band Just Us in Woerden and Harmonie Orkest de Volharding from Berkhout.

Werner Janssen – Componist, dirigent, saxofonist en improvisatie coach. 

Werner Jansen is begonnen met saxofoon spelen toen hij op zijn vijfde van zijn vader een Sopraansax kreeg. Op zijn 16e ontdekte hij het improviseren en speelde op gehoor muziek mee. Na afronding van zijn wiskunde studie werd hij toegelaten tot de jazz opleiding van het conservatorium. 

Componeren
De grote drive in zijn composities is om muziekstijlen te verbinden. En om voor klassiek geschoolde musici de wereld van jazz, pop en wereldmuziek in gecomponeerd en geschreven materiaal toegankelijk te maken. Improvisatie, articulatie en frasering spelen in deze composities een belangrijke rol.
Zijn composities weerspiegelen zijn passie voor zowel lichte als klassieke muziek en bieden blaasorkesten een leuke manier om kennis te maken met de speelmanier uit de lichte muziek. Hij componeert nieuw materiaal, swingend en met gevoel voor de verschillende muzikale werelden en biedt daarmee de klassiek gerichte ensembles de kans om zich eigentijds materiaal eigen te maken. 

Musiceren
Zijn werkterrein als saxofonist is heel breed. Zo treedt hij regelmatig op met het Metropole Orkest, de WDR Big Band, de Konrad Koselleck Big Band, the Ramblers en het orkest van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht. Ook speelt hij mee als multi instrumentalist bij projecten van entertainer Ellen ten Damme en operazangeres Tania Kross. En was gastsolist bij het Noord Nederlands Orkest, het Orkest van het Zuiden en het Orkest van het Oosten. Verder heeft hij studiowerk gedaan voor tal van artiesten en in musicals gespeeld.

Werner heeft met een grote verscheidenheid aan artiesten mogen optreden. Deze inspirerende ervaringen brachten hem er toe zijn liefde voor muziek uit te dragen en anderen te inspireren om boven zichzelf uit te kunnen stijgen als ze improviseren. Ook schreef hij enkele boeken over zijn eigen improvisatiemethodes. 

Dirigeren
Werner treedt op als gastdirigent van het Orkest van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht en is vaste dirigent van de Jazz Warriors Big Band in Amsterdam, Jazzband Just Us in Woerden en Harmonie Orkest de Volharding uit Berkhout.
